BIG WHEELS. BIG TRAVEL. BIG SURPRISE.

Whether the climbs are long and sustained or short and sweet, the Mayhem cruises up the trails with ease. The front end feels glued to the ground even on steep, punchy climbs, and the Living Link suspension seemed to give us a minor boost when we needed it most ... Due to the [composite] leaf-spring design, the Mayhem has a stiff rear end that allows riders to get aggressive on the trails ... The Mayhem's modern geommetry also gives it a quick and precise feel ... While the front end felt true to size, the rear soaked up big hits with ease and had a nice supported feel towards the end of the stroke. The bike's geometry aids its descending prowess, providing riders with confidence when the trails get rough. This isn't a bike we'd bring to the bike park, but it uses its 130mm of travel well.

2018 MOUNTAIN BIKE EDITORS' CHOICE WINNERS

The secret to the Mayhem’s success is in its simplicity. Where most mountain bikes use a typical pivot and rocker assembly, the Mayhem replaces one set of pivots (something that can wear out over time) with a super-durable, carbon leaf spring called Living Link. The link pairs with the shock to add liveliness and a bit of extra boost to the traction, and also stiffens up the connection between frame halves for a ride that’s tight and controlled. XC-oriented testers with a gravity jones loved the 5-star build’s (the 6-Star build is shown) climbing efficiency and the springy suspension that made the bike stick to loose ground. On descents, the Mayhem rode bigger than its 130mm of travel would suggest.—M.Y. $5,299 lb. (M, as tested with 5-Star build kit)

PINKBIKE SPOT MAYHEM 29 REVIEW

“The Mayhem's 130mm of travel, ultra-efficient suspension design and modern geometry all add up to create a super quick and stable trail machine. The Mayhem is quick and lively, with pedaling performance that encourages out of the saddle sprinting at every opportunity. It's worth a look for riders in search of an ultra-efficient all-rounder." -Mike Kazimer

LOVE AT FIRST RIDE: SPOT MAYHEM 29

“Over the period I held the Spot Mayhem in house for review, I passed it around and let two friends demo it. Each ended up buying one. After three months of riding it myself, I was left with a similar feeling that it’s a bike that, without a doubt, I would purchase. It’s often tough to identify exactly what it is about a bike that makes it so immediately likable. Maybe you just have a great day on it (I had many), or maybe it’s something subtle about the geometry and suspension that you can’t see on paper, but it just clicks. With the Mayhem, it’s likely a combination of traits, both perceived and material, that add up to a great-riding bike.”

SPOT MAYHEM 29 ON THE NORTH SHORE - LONG TERM REVIEW

I try to refrain from gushing on reviews, but I really like this thing. The fun factor is pinned, which is an impressive task with 29" hoops. It allows impressive feats with small travel, and has really opened my eyes to what smaller bikes can be capable of. It's not going to offer the big hit capability of a long travel enduro rig, but for much of the terrain many of us typically ride, the greater efficiency of something like this makes for an all round more fun and effective steed. Sometimes less can indeed be more as the slightly reduced pace in big chunk can often be more than offset by boosted speed and playfulness everywhere else.
